Employee of the Month

  • Katie Hutchins, Medical Records

    Jan

Nominated by: Tammy Down and Robin Emrick - Medical Records

Katie is one of the hardest working people at Union Hospital, she goes out of her way for our doctors, medical offices, medical staff, funeral homes, and patient families. Tammy noted that she recently had to cover for Katie during her day off. I must tell you, I do not know how she keeps it all together. Katie is always taking time to help and co-worker and never hesitates to ask how she can help. She really is the women behind the completed medical record. Robin added that Katie goes above and beyond the call of duty on a daily basis. Katie will reach out to members of the Medical Staff and will meet them on their terms anywhere day or night. The Medical Staff enjoy her enthusiasm and look forward to coming to complete their records. When a new physician comes on board with the Organization, she is the point of contact for medical record orientation. She has the ability to recall information they share with her and utilizes this information as an ice-breaker for their next visit to the department. Katie handles roughly 2,500 records per day and can recall where every record for the physician is located.

    Nominee: Rachael McCrae - Purchasing

Nominated by: Judy Murphy - Purchasing

I would like to nominate Rae for employee of the month because of her Shared Learning & Caring & Compassion. When I took over as supervisor for Materials Management Rae was a great support to me. I had to learn almost everything.Rae was never short with me, and believe me I made my share of mistakes. She took everything in stride and with a wonderful attitude.Rae helped me to believe in myself, taught me numerous ways to handle the inventory and was always there for me.It has been 3 years now and I can still count on Rae to be there for me. I drop in unannounced to her office and Rae stops what she is doing and listens to me .She gives me advice and helps me to work out my problem. Rae is always warm and compassionate and has a way of putting me at ease.I owe a lot of who I have become and how I have grown due to Rachael's caring ways and her knowledge that she always openly shares with me.I thank you and truly love you Rae! I would be lost without you.

    Nominee: Melissa Cohen

    Nominated by: Anonymous

On December 23rd, Melissa had a patient who was upset about being in the hospital and not being able to buy Christmas gifts for her grand-daughters. She told Melissa about how she wanted a baby-doll for her youngest grandchild; she mentioned it several times through out the shift. On the morning of Christmas Eve when Melissa’s shift had ended, she drove to Kmart (which happened to be the patient’s favorite store) and picked up to baby dolls. One for the little girl and a LIV doll for the older grand-daughter. She brought them back to the hospital along with wrapping paper. When Melissa presented the dolls to the patient, her eyes swelled up with tears. She immediately told Melissa she would pay her for the dolls, but Melissa responded that have already been paid for. Once again Melissa, congratulations for a Job well done. You are an incredible role model.

  • Amy Shives, Behavioral Health

    Dec

Nominated by: Andrea Lopez - Behavioral Health

Amy is the social worker for both Behavioral Health and the Cancer Programs. Amy is of great value to both programs. A few weeks ago I shared a story that was featured as a "Story of the Week" about how Amy goes above and beyond for her patients. Not only have I noticed that she does this for behavioral health, but she shows the same compassion and caring in her work for the cancer program. I know of a case in which Amy helped a cancer patient set-up his new apartment with assisting in grocery shopping and other activities to ease his transition. Additionally, I have called Amy on her day off while covering Crisis Intervention Services for assistance with more difficult cases. Amy never hesitates to answer the phone and help the team out to provide optimal patient care. These are only a few examples of what Amy does for our unit on a daily basis. Amy also invests time in attending various workshops and conferences that help to enhance her professional practice and make her an even better social worker. I feel if the entire hospital had an understanding of the special work that social workers provide to patients then each unit would want to have one! I enjoy working with Amy on a daily basis. Amy is bright, energetic and truly displays all of the values that we pride ourselves on at Union Hospital!

    Nominees:

Nominee: Natalie Scales - 3 East

Nominated by: Patricia Pawlikowski - 3 East

I want to nominate Natalie Scales for December's employee of the month related to the caring and compassion she demonstrates with her patients on a daily basis as illustrated in the following story of the month: Last Sunday at approximately 5am Natalie scales went into room 342 to help another nurse's pt. Approximately 20 minutes later, I realized Natalie was still in the room. I poked my head in to check on her and found her sitting in a chair beside the pt, a 57 year old female with spinal cord compression secondary to metastasis who's prognosis is poor. I could tell by looking at the woman that she had been crying. Natalie assured me that things were okay, and I excused myself from the room. She came out 10 minutes later and told me that she had noticed the woman watching the clock. Natalie asked her why she was doing this, and the patient began to cry. Natalie pulled up a chair and asked the patient, "You're thinking about time and how much you have left, aren't you?" The woman confirmed that this was true. Natalie told the patient,"You have to live in the present. You have a lot of wonderful things in your life and you don't want to miss out on them by watching the clock." She sat with the woman for 30 minutes calming her and reassuring her. Core Value: Caring and Compassion. In addition to her caring and compassion, Natalie is a team player. You always know the night is going to be a little bit better just because she is there! She goes out of her way to help anyone--patients and staff-- who needs help. Natalie truly deserves this nomination!

Nominee: Debbie LoveJoy - Bland Adult Day Services

Nominated by: Lois McCoy - Adult Day Services

Debbie has been an amazing coworker and team player at Adult Day Services. She consistently goes above and beyond for the members, caregivers, and staff. She has purchased items, including socks and underwear, for members in need. On her days off, Debbie often comes in to volunteer. Also, she arranged for her nurse coworker to have a vacation week. In addition to finding nursing coverage for that week, she came in on her days off to make sure things went smoothly. On several occasions, she has come in on her own time to do activities with the clients. Most recently Debbie came in on her day off to take "Snuggles" the bunny to the vet when it was sick and when the time came for the bunny to be put down, Debbie, on her day off, took her to the vet in Delaware. In addition, she paid some of the vet bill personally. Debbie is extremely caring and sensitive. She brings in dolls for one of our members just to see her smile. The members of Adult Day Services and Debbie's coworkers truly admire and appreciate her. She is a true asset to Union Hospital Adult Day Services.

  • Melissa Cohen, 3 East

    Nov

Nominated by: Brittany Mahoney & Nancy Billon - 3 East

This nomination really shows how lucky 3 East is to have Melissa and how Melissa exudes Union Hospital's values everyday. There are some nurses that are truly special and Melissa is one of them. Monday night, 09/19, we had an 18 year old male patient on the floor that came in with an accidental tylenol overdose. The patient's mother was extremely concerned because the mention of a possible liver transplant came up during day shift from GI. They were monitoring his AST/ALT/PT/PTT/INR closely. That night, Melissa Cohen was his nurse. Around 2300, the patient's 2130 lab work came back and his labs were off the charts. His AST and ALT had increased from 600/700 to 9000/10000 roughly. Things weren't looking good for him. Melissa called Dr. Haddadin right away who then called the GI on call for advice. The decision was made to transfer the patient to University of Maryland where he could be monitored for a possible liver transplant. Melissa kindly asked Dr. Haddadin to come to the floor and explain the POC to the patient and his mother. The doctor came to the floor and Melissa entered the room with him to provide support. After the discussion of what was going on, Melissa and Dr. Haddadin returned to the nurse's station. Ten minutes later, the patient's mother came out crying. Melissa immediately ran to her and offered her comfort. She sat in the hallway and cried with her. She was compassionate and understanding and let this 37 year old stranger cry on her shoulder. This went on for about an hour and Melissa came to me upset stating that the patient's mother had no way to get to University of Maryland since she had an appointment in the morning that she would not miss. Melissa was willing to set up transportation and hotel service completely paid for by her church. She spent most of her shift, when she wasn't caring for her other five patients, checking in with this young man and his mother. She answered any questions that they had. She made them feel as thought, he was her only patient. The patient was transferred off our floor around 0730 however, Melissa was planning on staying to comfort them until Hart to Heart picked the patient up. Melissa conveyed the true meaning of a nurse. She was kind, compassionate, caring, understanding, patient. She left an impression with that family that will be everlasting. She is a wonderful asset to our floor and Union Hospital.

    Nominees:

    Nominee: Debbie Jackson - EVS

Nominated by: Rick Ragan - Facilities

Before heading to the Great Place To Work Through Service Excellence meeting, I stopped a couple of EVS staff and asked if they had any good stories. I explained that I needed some positive stories about good service, teamwork, etc....One employee said : I can talk about Debbie Jackson all day long, She stays on top of things and always finds answers for you if you have a question. It was evident what a true team player Debbie is and how much the staff look up to her. I must say I was truly impressed by this. I have seen Debbie in action many times and she has always been Calm, Collective and truly focused on the task at hand. Debbie truly exemplified our Core Values everyday.

Nominee: Joe Piatelli - Adult Day Services

Nominated by: Amy Ingerson - Adult Services

Joe has become a tremendous asset to Adult Day Services since he was hired earlier this year. Joe is always volunteering to help out his co-workers and the ADS members, demonstrating the Union Hospital values everyday. Joe consistently offers to cover hours when coworkers are sick or on vacation and he is always the first one to offer to take one of our members to a medical appointment. Joe has also offered to help out on several occasions when a different department calls asking us if we are able to transport a patient to a medical appointment that they would otherwise not be able to keep. Joe shows compassion to our members each day; even when it is as simple as sitting down with them and just listening to what they have to say. Joe has become an invaluable member to the Adult Day Services team.

Nominee: Dana Sokolowski - Union Audiology Services

Nominated by: Donna Schultz - Triangle Health Alliance

I would like to nominate Dr. Dana Sokolowski. Recently I was on the elevator with her and when we got to the ground we saw an elderly lady having troublt getting into the restroom. Dana rushed over to her and made sure that she got in and that she knew how to get the door lock and how to get out. Dana stayed until the elderly lady was done. She did not have to do this. But this is part of her naature. Dana is a kind and caring person. I have worked with Dana for six years. The kindness and caring that she shows her patients and others everyday is awesome. I am honored to nominate Dana for employee of the month.

  • Priscilla Stevens, Triangle Health Alliance

    Oct

Nominated by: Name: Zack Royston - Triangle Health Alliance - Patient Access

On any given day, we struggle to meet the demand for behavioral health services within our community. Recently this demand was significantly increased when one of our licensed clinical professional counselors in our outpatient behavioral health office resigned with little notice. At that moment, the reaction from the remaining licensed clinical professional counselor, Priscilla Stevens, could have been, “I have a full panel of patient’s and I am doing all I can.” Instead, Priscilla recognized that many vulnerable patients could not go without support. With input from the practice psychiatrist, Dr. Min Yu, a review of the caseload was performed and the highest risk patients were identified. Then with the assistance of Tammi Randolph, the office coordinator, patient schedules were modified so that the approximately 20 high risk patients had minimal disruption in the timing of their next appointment. The process of review and scheduling was completed in about 2 hours. Priscilla quickly developed creative solutions to accommodate not only her full panel of existing patients but to serve many of her former colleague’s patients. Priscilla also setup appointments after normal business hours allowing for an additional 6 patient’s per week to be seen. During the last two months, Priscilla’s actions along with the support of the care team in our Behavioral Health practice have resulted in a strong continuum of care for nearly all of the patients. This is a clear demonstration of their commitment to the health and well-being of our friends and families in Cecil County. Disruptions in care have occurred but Priscilla’s professionalism and leadership helped see the practice and more importantly the patient’s through a very challenging time. In addition, Priscilla, like many employees drives past many other organizations in her more than an hour commute each way to help our organization achieve success. I am honored to nominate Priscilla Stevens for employee of the month.

    Nominees:

    Nominee: Lisa O’Dwyer - ICU

Nominated by: Nicole Warrick Riley - PCU Staff Nurse

I would like to take this opportunity to nominate Lisa O'Dwyer for employee of the month for consistently demonstrating professionalism and making the needs of our patients her top priority. Recently while working a busy weekend shift where both ICU and PCU were short staffed, PCU called two Rapid Responses and One Code Blue. Lisa was in charge in ICU and responded to our needs quickly as the Rapid Response nurse. She never once complained about her own high patient load in ICU, or made us feel like we were asking too much of her, although it would have been easy to do. She was thorough and patient in her approach with each call, remaining patient focused and continuously supporting the nursing staff. To say that the day was stressful would be an understatement, but I cannot express what a relief it was to know that when we called for help it would be Lisa that answered, not only to help our patients but to serve as a supportive, calming influence on the staff. We are lucky to have such an amazing resource as a part of our team.

Nominee: Beth Money - Cancer Program

Nominated by: Kelly Weber and Katie Hutchins - Medical Records

On Thursday September 8th, we saw Beth walking in to start her day. She had several bags in her hand and we commented on how much we liked one of the bags. Beth told us she had a patient that was being discharged and did not have any food at home and no family that was close by. Beth said she had bought some food for the patient to help him for a few days until hospice could come in to offer their services. Beth’s story touched our hearts. We know the Heart of the Patient was touched as well. Great Job Beth with helping our patient.

    Nominee: Teresea Ernst - Pediatrics

Nominated by: Maureen Jimenez - Pediatrics

I want to make sure that Teresa is recognized for her role model nursing practice. She is always a pleasure to be around and work with. Teresa is professional and compassionate with everyone she meets. Teresa went above and beyond by coming in to help when we had a very busy unit. She made herself available to help me out as needed as I transition to the role of a Pediatric nurse. She also stayed for an extended shift to help an ED nurse who was kind enough to help us on Peds when the need arose.

Nominee: Jenny Hokuf - Emergency Room

Nominated by: Sharon Swartout - Emergency Room

Jenny is an awesome RN. She is always asking,” Do you need any help", while working her own assignment in the ED, I don't know she does it. But this day it was outside of ED where she was still willing to help. She was off work, driving home on a Friday afternoon and was one of the first persons on the scene of a 3 car accident involving 6 teenagers from RS high school. She assessed the situation, called the ED to alert them and to see if a paramedic unit was dispatched. I arrived on scene because one of the teenagers was my best friend's daughter who is like a daughter to me. I was very worried as I approached the scene to see if my friend’s daughter was alright, and was relieved to see Jenny on the side of the road next to her waiting for the paramedics and the ambulances. She was calm and comforting to the teenagers while they were waiting for their parents to arrive. I am grateful to her for stopping. I believe she should be recognized for all that she did.

Nominee: Cheryl Vogel - Case Management

Nominated by: Ema Ndi and Kerry Zellman - 3 East

The following observations have been consistent for a long time. 1. Cheryl Vogel has consistently showed readiness to help fellow colleagues and nurses even when those patients were not hers. 2. She calls insurance companies for nursing to assist a patient to get a subcutaneous injection inpatient instead of coming in the next day outpatient - this act was cost effective for this patient and greatly satisfied the patient. 3. She came in during her vacation on a holiday to ensure that staff and patients are being managed well - this was exceptional. 4. She supported a nurse who was trying to reason with a doctor on behalf of a patient - Cheryl was firm with this doctor in asking him to see that he addresses the patients concerns. This was a big relief to the nurse and the patient eventually got the attention he so deserved. 5. I noticed Cheryl in a patients room and I asked why she was talking to this patient when I had already identified that she was not the case manager - her response was" just checking to make sure we do not miss anything ".Cheryl further took the time to follow through on this patient to make sure his discharge was effortless - I was so impressed by her genuine concern because this was not her patient. We have been wanting to say what a role model she is and how she is an ambassador of service excellence for a long time because she has been consistent. We hope she gets recognized as employee of the month to recognize her many valuable qualities and continue to inspire us all and others.

  • Karen McCamant, Patient Care Services

    Sep

Nominated by: Name: Amy Shives, Behavioral Health

I wanted to make sure that Karen was recognized for not only doing her job, but saving a patients life. There was a patient who suffered with an opiate addiction, he was admitted to the hospital after using opiates intravenously and causing a severe infection that almost killed him. This pt signed himself out AMA from the medical floor in almost critical condition after not getting the pain medications that he requested. No one could talk him into staying in the hospital, though everyone involved in his care attempted. The pt was setting in a wheelchair in the front of the hospital in a hospital gown, laboring to breath. No one know how to get the pt to come back to receive care, and if he did not come back he would have died. Karen was coming into work in the morning and seen the pt, not knowing what was going on or that he signed himself out. Seeing his condition, she walked over to him and successfully talked the pt into letting her take him back to the ER, all in all saving his life. The pt spent weeks on the medical floor and weeks on Behavioral Health. Karen stopped in to check on him while on the medical floor but he did not remember due to seeing so many people who she was. When he was on the Behavioral Health he requested to see the “woman that saved my life” before I am discharged to rehab. I saw Karen in the cafĂ© and let her know that the pt was requesting to see her. She visited with him and he thanked her many times. The pt was successfully discharged with a new outlook on life and it all began with a hello are you ok and an introduction.

    Nominees:

    Nominee:: Kara Vogel, Outpatient Registration

Nominated by: Carolyn Frantsi, Medical Records

Why: My father, Albert D. Garrett, who is 84 years old had received a prescription from the wound care center on 8/8/11. Unfortunately, the script did not contain his name and the pharmacy would not fill it. He brought it to the out patient department of the hospital seeking help, as the wound care center was now closed for the day. Kara was able to assist him in getting the script completed, after much effort on her part including making multiple phone calls and even walking to the Emergency room for assistance with the issue. Kara even stayed past her shift in order get this resolved. I would like to personally thank her for taking the time to help my elderly father. She is certainly and employee who exemplifies the values of caring and compassion. He was so appreciative that she took the time to help him. She is an asset to this institution and a role model for all of us to admire. A sincere thank you from a fellow employee for a job well done and very much appreciated.

    Nominees Name: Dr. Hundal

    Nominated By: Patty Keene, Pediatrics

Why: There are 2 parts to this nomination--as a mother of a patient and a nurse that cares for his patients. As the mother of 3 children that Dr. Hundal has cared for I would like to thank him for his abilities as a physician and a surgeon. My son had something new for Dr. Hundal to see during surgery which was never seen through his multiple intubations as a baby and he corrected the problem that was presented and followed up to make sure it did not return. I feel that Dr. Hundal also restored my daughter's hearing. She was diagnosed with borderline moderate hearing loss and just recently after tubes were placed and since removed she has normal hearing. Her speech is developing on a daily basis. As a nurse caring for his patients I want to make known his ability to communicate with the staff about the care of his patients. He will come to the floor and make sure the staff is comfortable with the orders or enter new orders if needed. He communicates with the patient/family in regards to plan of care. His caring/compassion show in his smile and through his communication. I often hear other employees compliment him also. He is a blessing sent to us as a hospital and me personally for my kids. Thank you for being amazing!

    Nominee: Kay Hill, Nursing Supervisor

Nominated by: Pat Dickens, Adult Day Services

I would like to nominate Kay Hill for Employee of the Month. Kay has gone above and beyond her work duties by volunteering her personal time to come to the Adult Day Care Center and completely weed, mulch and plant flowers which she provided with her own money. This job was a major undertaking and she approached us offering to clean it up.
This to me displays a great Service Excellence attitude towards the hospital and she showed teamwork and true dedication beyond her everyday role. Thanks Kay for your hard work.

  • Heather Brackin, Infusion Center

    Aug

    A patient wrote:

    Dear Ms Fitzgerald,

I am calling to tell you about my experience watching Heather Brackin in the Infusion Center. When I get my treatment I have watched her in action and I think she must have 4 hands for all that she does. She is a wonderful lady and she helps everyone and goes above and beyond with all of her patients. She is very dedicated and it is obvious that she loves being a nurse here at Union Hospital. For weeks I have listened to her explain everything to patients and one day when she was getting ready to start an IV for a patient, I overheard her say to the very nervous lady, that she would be as gentle as possible.

I just don’t know how she does it all, she is turning off bells, machines that are making all kinds of noise, taking blood pressures, checking on medications and smiling the whole time. She is so respectful to each person she cares for.

I come to the hospital a lot and see the Employee of the Month screen-I was wondering if I could nominate Heather for the month-she certainly deserves to be recognized for all she does for the patients getting treatment in the infusion center. Many of these patients are receiving Chemo and they certainly need a nurse like Heather who shows that she cares everyday with every single patient.

    Sincerely,
    Reba Lytle.

Nominee's Name: Elizabeth Grosso, Behavioral Health Services

Nominated by: Amy Shives, Behavioral Health Services

Lizzy goes above and beyond for our patients on behavioral Health on a daily basis. She truly knows the meaning of service excellence and models those behaviors. Yesterday, we were discharging a patient who ended up on our unit who lived in SC, he was to stop at the pharmacy and then go to the bus station. The patient called from the Pharmacy stating there were some problems with getting his medications. Lizzy was determined to make sure this patient received all his medications, so he could continue to function. After several calls back and forth between the patient and pharmacy, and not giving up, she accomplished her goal and the patient was able to make it to the bus station on time and is headed home to continue his care. This patient was beyond grateful for all that she did.

  • Cathie Null, Medical Management

    Jul

     Nominated by: Donna Woodis

Cathie had a patient in CCU that was terminal and needed to be extubated. Cathie spent many hours with this patient’s wife, for they had no children and no family in the state. The wife was devastated over having to make the decision to extubate her husband and coming to grips with the end of life decisions. Her sisters were coming from out of state to be with her but could not come for another week. Cathie sat with this patient’s wife many hours on her own time after work to help console her and so that she did not have to be alone in the process. Per the wife’s request, she asked if she could bring their small dog into to see her husband so that it could say goodbye to his master. Cathie made arrangements so that this could happen. My understanding is the dog laid on his Masters shoulders and did not move. We go through our work day and do the job in front of us, but do not often take the time to recognize one another. This was Caring and Compassion at its best. I am proud to have Cathie as my co-worker, she is caring and compassion and integrity wrapped all in one. Of course I am not surprised of this RN who has been here at Union Hospital for 45 years.

    Nominees:

    Nominees Name: Robin Garrett
    Nominated by: Cheryl Hewlett

In the month of April MIC's hand hygiene compliance was at a low 54%. Robin was very distraught over this. As I was rounding on the unit one afternoon she made her frustration known to me. Robin told me that she watches the "nurses" and that they are washing their hands. So I sat with her and explained that it was not only nursing's responsibility to provide clean hands to our patients. We looked at the data and I explained that it takes a team effort to be successful with this initiative. Other staff gathered as we spoke and this sparked a great conversation regarding hand hygiene. I later learned that Robin put an email out to the MIC Staff expressing to them how uptight and concerned she had been with the hand hygiene washing score and that she has spoken with me and gotten guidance on how to improve MICS score. In her email, Robin took the time to share with the staff an outline that lists all the roles on the unit, how many were observed, and their percentage of compliance. Robin told the department, “I don't know about you, but I am embarrassed at this percentage and have made it a personal goal to remind everyone to pump in and pump out. I believe we can be at 100%!”. I truly believe that this was the effort of one staff member taking personal accountability in the pursuit of the goal. Through her efforts Robin has sparked the energy needed to protect our patients from harm by advocating for clean hands. Robin exemplifies our values of Leadership and Shared Learning. Taking the lead on the hand hygiene initiative has had a ripple effect in MIC. The physicians have discussed hindrances to cleaning their hands and donning sterile attire before an emergent case. This lead the nurses to take pictures of properly opened delivery packs, and posted them in the rooms in order to standardize the procedure so it is easier for physicians to wash and don sterile gowns, and gloves prior to an emergent delivery. I applaud Robin for these efforts and I look forward to seeing their numbers for June. I hope this example of personal accountability will be repeated by others so that all patients will be provided a safe experience in our organization.

  • Roberto Torres, Food & Nutrition Services

    Jun

    Nominated by: Patty Keene, Pediatrics

On April 28th, I witnessed and event that goes above and beyond. I was the nurse taking care of pediatric patient, whose mother did not speak English. You can only imagine the anxiety this mother felt when trying to make decisions about her child’s health. The language line was requested, but I could sense the anxiety that this mother was feeling and we contacted Roberto Torres for assistance. When he arrived on the floor and entered the room with Dr. Hamwi and myself, he introduced himself to the mother of the patient in Spanish, and immediately you could see the relief come over her. During their two day stay with us, Roberto assisted us with communications frequently up to and including discharge. Roberto even came in on his day off to help with the discharge. The patient was so thankful for his kindness. Being physically present really made a difference. Thank You for assisting us with one of our smallest patients.

    Nominees:

Nominees Name: Nicole Bush, RN Maternity
Nominated by: Alesha Tunstall, RN Maternity

Nicole is an outstanding nurse and we are ever so privileged to work beside her. Her passion and love for her patients is immeasurable. She continuously goes above and beyond with her time and caring. One day recently we had a labor that seemed like any other, until the baby had consistent decelerations in its heart rate. Nikki was insistent on the quick response from all team members. After an emergency c-section, intubation and suctioning, this term meconium newborn is alive because of Nikki’s excellent skill and critical thinking. She supports our unit in so many ways. Almost every week she is coming in on extra time, even after long classes, and sleepless nights. She is always on the ball and smiling. Nikki handles every situation she encounters with professionalism and safe and effective care. Her critical thinking and quick actions have saved many lives. Her dedication is a quality we should all admire and strive to meet. She should be commended for her selfless time and love continuously demonstrated at Union Hospital.

Nominee: Charlotte Barton, RN Nursing Support
    Phil Scott, RN Intensive Care
    James Pawlioswki, 2 East Surgical

    Nominated by: Michelle Laurer-PSYCH

During the early hours of Sunday morning, April 17th, a patient on our behavioral health unit became violent, cornering a nurse and striking her with a hard plastic water pitcher. Charlotte Barton, nursing supervisor, James Paulikowski, CNA and Phil Scott, RN, were among the first to respond. Thanks to their swift and decisive action, the nurse was saved from even further injuries while all other patients on the unit were kept safe in a coordinated effort led by Charlotte. At this point, the patient, still unsecured, had set a small fire and was using a cell phone charger as a weapon, while throwing objects to keep people away. He was stopped by Phil Scott, who was able to quickly assess the situation, remain calm, and take the most fitting course of action at the moment to eliminate the immediate threat. If it were not for the quick reaction of these three employees, who did not hesitate to come to the rescue of their coworkers, nor question their own safety, much more damage could have been sustained. They demonstrated truly heroic qualities and deserve medals of Honor!

    Nominee: Mary Sorrelle, Cancer Program
Nominated by: Sylvia Heinze, Cancer Program Director

On May 11 we received notice that we had received full accreditation (with commendation in all eight categories possible) from the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer. Mary Sorelle, the registrar for the cancer program is the primary driver for this prestigious award. Mary is diligent and detail oriented. She is the person who provides the structure and guidance for the rest of the team to shine. Cancer care in the service area of Union hospital has been greatly improved because of Mary's efforts. She works in the background providing guidance and information for the cancer care team to provide excellent-award winning care every day! Mary is a long term employee at Union hospital. In her position as registrar she is the backbone of the cancer program. She tirelessly works on all the details that are necessary to document all the information for the American College of Surgeons for the 36 standards. One of the standards is timeliness of data submission. Last summer there was a change over of software and many problems with the implementation. Mary worked many hours of overtime so that our data met the standard and qualified us for commendation in that standard. Other programs sort of hinted that they would make it work out somehow but Mary held to our value of honesty and completed the data submission with no “fudging”. She is not officially in a leadership role but she leads the cancer program in the pursuit of excellence. Mary makes us all look good and she is always on alert for what we can write up as a program improvement.

  • Shannon Davis, Triangle Health Alliance

    May

Nominated by: Shannon Pannell, Patient Financial Services and Jessie Narron, Triangle Health Alliance

Recently, the billing office has been working in conjunction with Triangle Health Alliance with regards to patient billing. By teaming up, we have opened up the lines of communication between the two offices for updated information to be passed back in forth. This has allowed for faster payments of claims that might not otherwise be paid. Because of this pairing, I have had been blessed with the opportunity to work closely with Shannon Davis. On two occasions, Shannon had been investigating non payment of physician’s claims and was able to resolve these through the insurance representatives. While on the phone with those representatives, she logged into our accounts to determine if the hospital was paid as well. Upon realizing that we had not been paid, Shannon spoke with the representatives on our behalf and had the claims reprocessed to pay. Afterwards, Shannon called me to let me know that she had followed up and to document the account so that our claim specialist did not duplicate any work.

Shannon consistently strives to go above and beyond in her position, willing to help anyone that needs assistance. In addition to her teamwork, Shannon has an incredible regard for Service Excellence. Jessie Narron states “Shannon constantly uses the gift of positive regard to fellow coworkers and all customers. Her favorite line that she says several times a day is "I appreciate you."

It is evident every day Shannon comes to work, that she loves her job, the people she works with and the patients she is always helping. We feel it is our turn to say how much we “appreciate her” for motivating us to not only to become better co-workers but also better people with the examples she sets with every person, every day, every time.

    Nominees:

    Nominee: Brian Griffin, Pharmacy
    Nominated by: Bobby Thomas, Pharmacy

I am nominating Brian Griffin for Employee of the Month. Last week Brian stopped by an ATM machine on his lunch break. He noticed a large amount of cash and a credit card in the machine. He retrieved the cash ($400.00) and the credit card, called the bank to report what he found and asked them to contact the individual whose card it was. The owner of the card met Brian the next day at the hospital and retrieved his money and card. The gentleman tried to give Brian a reward, but Brian refused it. Brian is one of the most honest and dedicated people I know. He always puts forth a positive attitude towards his family, his work and his community. Besides being a good example to his two boys, he has mentored several Cecil County students. Union Hospital is fortunate to have Brian as one of their valuable employees.

    Nominee: Donna Frick, Medical Records
Nominated by: Tammy Canale, Medical Records

Each and every day we come across a co-worker who always goes above and beyond. Most of us overlook it. We feel we are just doing our job. In my time here at Union Hospital I have come to know Donna Frick. She is the definition of Service Excellence, not only through her daily work with patients, but also through things most people don’t see or even know about. When I worked the switchboard answering calls, we had a woman who would call every other day. She always needed help. Answering calls on the switchboard you don’t always have the time you would like to spend helping each patient. We would always have to rush her conversations. One day Mrs. Sweeney called in for medical records and I passed that call to Donna. Four years later I moved to Medical Records department, only to find out Donna and Mrs. Sweeney still talked all the time. Mrs. Sweeney had no family or friends to look after her. She was blind due to her health problems. I would walk pass Donna’s office and see her looking up phone numbers for her and transferring her to the doctor’s offices she needed and chatting with Mrs. Sweeney about her health and how things were going for her. Sometimes the best thing for a patient’s health is someone to listen. Each time she would call me and ask to speak with Donna. She always raved about how wonderful and helpful Donna was to her. Her eye sight being what it was she could not get by without her. How she considered Donna like her granddaughter. Last week Mrs. Sweeney passed on. I know in my heart Donna made her life a little easier. That is what service excellence is to me!

    Nominee: Dianna Weber, Medical Records
Nominated by: Medical Records Clerical Staff

Diana always goes above and beyond to help others. Recently she took on the task of learning a new job function to help the Medical Records clerical staff with the new meditech physician order entry problem. She is helping for only a few hours a day and making a big difference. Diana is always looking for ways to help out her co-workers. Thanks so much Diana for all that you do.

  • Delta Moses, Bulk Stores

    Apr

Nominated by: Raymond Davis, Materials Management

Delta is always giving her customers at Union 120% cramming as much productivity into an 8 hour shift as possible. Often she is harassed to stop working and eat lunch. Delta has a second job which she goes to every night after leaving Union Hospital and works there until 11:30pm at night. On Feb 14th after leaving her second job, Delta was concerned that the falling snow would severely delay her co-workers, most of who live in remote areas from getting into work on Tuesday morning. Instead of going home, she drove to her sisters house (who lives within walking distance of the hospital) to spend the night if she was needed Tuesday which consequently was her day off. At 6am she called our department to see if anyone had made it in, but got the voicemail. Delta decided she was correct about the snow problem and came into work. Delta covered the entire department by herself until her co-workers finally got dug out and made their way to work. Delta’s dedication to her teammates, patients and internal customers demonstrates her commitment to customer service.

    Nominees:

    Nominee: Paige Sullivan, MIC
    Nominated by: Amanda Mcmullen, MIC

Why: I am nominating Paige based upon the knowledge that "above and beyond" is her every day work ethic. Recently another letter has been sent to Dr. Lewis by a patient who described Paige as "comforting, positive, and attentive." The patient expressed that she even felt as though she was"spoilied" by Paige. The patient exclaimed that this was a feeling that she has never felt from a hospital staff before. I called Paige to congratulate her on merits of the aforementioned letter, and asked, " Is this the fire truck family?" To which she replied, "No, this is another family." Earlier in the week, Paige was discharging a family and the 2 year old locked the newborn baby in that car alone. This caused great immediate distress in the mother of the newborn, but with Paige's calming presence, she reassured the mother that she would evaluate the newborn through the window until help arrives. Ultimately the fire company came and opened the car doors with an content unaware newborn inside. By the end of the event, the mother was taking pictures of Paige and the 2 year old in front of the fire truck. Paige exemplifies what a patient/family focused experience is meant to be. She focuses not only on the condition, diagnosis, and vitals, but sees the family as a whole and cares for their needs.

Nominee: Michael Lotesto, Denise Lipford, Jared Gardner, Food and Nutrition
Nominated by: Cheryl Hewlett, Infection Control

Why: Food and Nutrition Services has been struggling with their hand hygiene compliance numbers. I met with Ken Dowd and Holly Emmons to review the steps for hand hygiene related to food delivery and the numbers came back disappointing the following month. Ken and I met again, he spoke with Holly, and they once again educated their team to the practice and to the data. In our February monthly Hand Hygiene meeting the secret shoppers stated that Michael Lotesto and Jared Gardner from Food & Nutrition services were observed performing hand hygiene while delivering trays. They were performing hand hygiene exactly as it was taught to them. I thought this is great. The following week, I was coming out of my office and Denise Litford and Michael Lotesto were pushing one of the lunch carts and discussing hand hygiene so I decided to eaves drop on their conversation. What I heard was them discussing the steps to hand hygiene for food delivery and pick-up in the correct sequence and how they paid their learning forward by instructing others who were not following the proper sequence. They spoke of interventions they put in place such as keeping the alcohol gel on top of the cart and when they took their gloves off and how they no longer wear gloves to pass out trays but wash their hands before picking up a tray and after delivering one. I stopped to tell them how proud I was of them. Their comments were; everyone has to do it right, we want the department to be proud of us, we want everyone to realize that we can do this right, and it's the only way to stop the spread of germs. I stood their in awe for a moment. My vision became one of two large light bulbs glowing above their heads and I saw our MRSA numbers plummeting on the graphs. The youngest of our troops were playing a lead role in our fight against infection. They were not only doing the right thing for patient safety but they were talking about it and informing others. These three young employees were taking their learning to the next step and being role models in the fight against infection. This is the level of responsibility required to make hand hygiene a habit and not a task. This is the level of service excellence that will keep our patients safe. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of employee of the month than Michael, Jared and Denise.

    Nominee: Beth Money, Cancer Program

Nominated by: Arlene Bakken, Deb Martin, Cathy Hart, Respiratory Dept

We would like to nominate Patty as Employee of the Month. Patty has been so helpful to the Respiratory Care Department in recent weeks when we have had an extra large work load. We were having difficulty keeping the peds patients on schedule with their treatments. All the peds nurses have helped us, but Patty has consistently helped and has done it very graciously and with much understanding towards our department. Patty always has a smile and warm caring welcome to both her patients and co-workers.

  • Ana McCleary, 3 East

    Mar

Nominated by: Christie Guns, Nurse Manager 3 East

Everyday I experience something that occurs at Union Hospital that moves me. Recently I was reminded by an employee of what it takes to make a difference. A few weeks ago I received an email about Ana; the email was titled “Pleasant Encounter” and was written by a patient’s family member. The email reads. I have been staying at night at Union Hospital with my sister who is battling Colon Ca. On Tuesday evening, a very pleasant and efficient nurse came into my sister room. She told my sister before she administered any care that she wanted to study her chart and familiarize herself with my sister’s case. After being gone a short while she came back into the room and told my sister what medicines she was to be given for the night and that she was there to make her as comfortable as possible. Every time we put the call light on, she was there almost immediately and if it was not time for pain medication, she was would move my sister around in the bed and make her comfortable instead of saying” I can’t give you anything now”. She has a great personality and wonderful bedside manner and Union is very fortunate to have her. Ana also went out of her way to make sure I was comfortable as well. Just as I was beginning to think the nursing profession has lost integrity, this bright energetic young nurse reaffirmed my faith.

Christie also wanted to share that she has had the opportunity to work with Ana a few times on night shift and has always been impressed with her personal interaction with patients. Another example of this is when a patient had to be NPO for a few days and the patient kept stating that as soon as he could eat he wanted a nice big cheeseburger. Well without doubt when that patient was returned to a regular diet, Ana reported to work that night with a cheeseburger from the best burger place in town. Ana really does show each and everyday how important it is for a positive experience and memory for our patients.

    Nominees:

Nominee : Teresa Mcknight, 2 East
Nominated by: Dorene Kennard, 2 East

Today 1/30/11 for the 7a-7pm shift we had one CNA for 22 patients. The acuity of our unit was very high, and all of my assignments were a fall risk. Teresa went in several rooms today when patients put their call light on. She placed patients on bed pans, and cleaned them up afterwards. She was also helped several of the nurses get patients repositioned. At one point I even witnessed her walking with a confused patient who kept getting out of bed to keep them occupied. She asked the CNA today several times if there was anything she could do to help out. Theresa is a unit clerk, but often goes above and beyond her duties as a clerk; it is always a pleasure to work with. She is a true asset to the 2 East department. Today she was like our Mother Goose.

    Nominee: Jessica Istvan, Emergency Services
    Nominated by: Pat Dillen MD

Jessica is an all around wonderful person and an exceptional nurse. She demonstrates all the qualities that a health care provider should possess. She is bright, energetic, compassionate and organized. Jessica will stop whatever it is she is doing to assist with any problem that comes up. She is a team player and true role model. Jess is the type of person who makes you feel lucky to work with her. For these outstanding qualities I nominate her for Employee of the Month.

    Nominee: Sue Schooley, HIS
    Nominated by” Lenore Tietjens-Grillo MD

With CPOE starting on 2/15, Sue has been juggling creating order sets in meditech, training physicians, answering urgent phones call all hours of the day from Doctors who are “stuck” with a question or a problem. Sue is as responsive as anyone I have ever worked with at Union Hospital; she always listens calmly, even to the most frustrated CPOE user, which sometimes has been me. Thanks for all your hard work Sue!

  • John Khov & Tim McQuaide, Pharmacy

    Feb

    Nominated by: David Jaspen, Pharmacy

On December 11, 2010, John and Tim were the pharmacists that covered the 12 hours (from 7 AM to 7 PM) that the pharmacy is open. Tim had opened that day and had left by 5:30 PM when John received a stat order for a Glucagon IV infusion as an antidote for a patient that had taken an overdose of their beta blocker medication. Glucagon was on a national backorder and the hospital had very limited supplies and not enough to provide the infusion that was requested. John quickly gathered what medication he could from Pyxis machines throughout the hospital to prepare a partial first dose and then started calling to other hospitals to see if he could borrow more Glucagon. Christiana was willing to lend 10 vials, so John then tried to contact the hospital's courier service. However, he was unable to get through to the service even after several attempts. He then contacted Tim at home and Tim agreed to go to Christiana to pick up the medication. Tim then stayed to help to prepare the needed dose of medication and make sure that he and John restocked a dose of Glucagon to each Pyxis machine. This type of dedication to our patients and to fellow employees is consistently on display with both John and Tim as they routinely go out of their way to provide exceptional patient service.

    Nominee: Kathy Jerschied, Emergency Department
Nominated by: Barbara Bessicks, Emergency Department

Kathy was working on 1/12/11 when a critically ill patient arrived. She was found in the snow with her 3 daschunds at her side. The dogs were placed back in the home by the paramedics. When the patient arrived she still had the 3 leashes with her. The patient did require transfer to Christiana Care for further care. The two friends that were present at the patients bedside before transport had been talking with Kathy. They were sharing the story of the patient loving her daschunds and she had just rescued "Buddy" the day after Christmas a 7yr old timid daschund. Kathy has a very fond feeling for daschunds; as she has her own, named "Lilly". During the course of the conversation the friends had mentioned the patients sister would be caring for 2 of the dogs but felt she could not take all 3. Kathy offered to foster the dog until the patient was discharged and recovered. Buddy has now joined the Jerschied household until the recovery of his owner. He is now in the company of two ladies "Lilly" the daschund and "Josie" the beagle. It has been a good transition and all are getting along. I just wanted to share this heart warming story. The care of compassion of our patients also extend to our 4 legged best friends

    Nominee: Melinda Dixson, Emergency Services
    Nominated by: Joanne Silverman

Mindi has a quest for knowledge that far surpasses anyone I know. What makes her standout from the rest is her willingness to share what she knows. She is always at the hospital teaching and her classes encourage you to want to learn more. On the unit she is continually teaching and if she doesn't have an answer to the question she will lead you through the process of finding your answer. As a nurse, she is a model for the growth and potential that can be achieved with hard work and perseverance. She has been a staff nurse, charge nurse and now a nurse practioner. She is an exemplary employee who cares above and beyond about her patients and co workers.
