Patricia Pawlikowski from 3 East shared this story regarding Natalie Scales:
Last Sunday at approximately 5 am Natalie Scales went into a patient room to help another nurse's patient. Approximately 20 minutes later, I realized Natalie was still in the room. I poked my head in to check on her and found her sitting in a chair beside the patient, a 57 year old female with spinal cord compression secondary to metastasis whose prognosis is poor. I could tell by looking at the woman that she had been crying. Natalie assured me that things were okay, and I excused myself from the room. She came out 10 minutes later and told me that she had noticed the woman watching the clock. Natalie asked her why she was doing this, and the patient began to cry. Natalie pulled up a chair and asked the patient, "You're thinking about time and how much you have left, aren't you?" The woman confirmed that this was true. Natalie told the patient, "You have to live in the present. You have a lot of wonderful things in your life and you don't want to miss out on them by watching the clock." She sat with the woman for 30 minutes calming her and reassuring her.
